Hello Jonny, thank you for this content.. I just subscribed to your channel. it's good to know your channel has this content..

Just when everything was going good for them, somebody who was probably jealous of their fast success drop a dime on them to get 15 minutes of fame, this always happens even in 2024, no matter if your Rich and Famous or eve Poor with nothing to show for it; their will be that one person who dig up some dirt in your past where you left just o make a name for them selves.
.
VERY INTERESTING! I have actually wondered about this exact question for a while now!
Thank yoooou <3
I find it strange people get so obsessed with having a “main pop girl.” I feel like in the past people listened to a lot of the same stuff because there were less options. Yeah there’s more variety now and less of a broad appeal but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Still so much good music being released
I guess that's true. There are some promising artists out there.
Yes, the fame paradigm was changed by the social media. Any plain Jane or just any shmuck has a shot to stardom at the tip of their fingers. But being accessible to fame comes with a cost - the quality is compromised. Reason why influencers like UA-camrs, TikTokers do the most silly, stupid ass things just to remain relevant and as to why the Kardashians became famous despite the serious lack of any skill or talent. It all boils down to marketing, the same way corporation market the most useless products with colorful packaging, aggressive promotion and hype.
I think the marketing is a far greater factor than in the 80s/90s definitely. The image, brand and social media following plays a far greater part. Hence why so much of the variety and character in popular music is gone.
Thank you for such a riveting and thorough analysis of this once-unexplainable, but well known phenomenon. It would make sense that the power of a female star overcoming the odds, having once faced ridicule and ostracism, to achieve global success is something that a population of marginalised people facing similar experiences may aspire to. The adoration of these female superstars not only spans the generations since the late 1960s and the time of Stonewall, but has perhaps existed for centuries before. Female stars of entertainment media prior to television, including film and stage, would draw a disproportionately higher number of gay men, perhaps most notably with the musicals of the first half of the 20th Century. The MGM musical backlot was renown for its high number of homosexual men among its creative teams and backing dancers. What will be interesting to observe in the coming decades is whether greater equality in many developed countries will reduce this draw to flamboyant escapism that these women represent. We can already see the generational differences between gay male cohorts, with strong variance almost by decade, since the 1960s as growing acknowledgment, acceptance, and eventually equality took place. Many thanks for such an interesting synopsis.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks 😀
Even Madonna herself will tell you Michael Jackson was bigger…..
yes overall in the 80s he was bigger. but he didn't release anything in 1986, so for a brief time Madonna was (IMHO)
Barbra Streisand is one of the first and biggest supporters of the gay community, she already had a lot of gay fans in the 60's and has always supported them, and when Barbra's son Jason later turned out to be gay too, she became even more of a supporter from the gay community, and Olivia Newton-John is an artist that is quickly forgotten, but Olivia said that early in her career she was surrounded by gay people and said that they are the most loyal fans you can have, and Olivia also often performed at Gay parades and Xanadu was even seen as one of the Gay anthems in Australia. I'm speaking for myself now, but I think that why I love female artists so much is because as a gay man I can empathize very well with the song lyrics, because they often sing about men and if you are in love or have a broken heart you will find comfort in their music, and you will adore them as an artist even more.
I read Barbra's autobiography over Christmas and now I'm definitely a fan - yes I read about how supportive she was of the gay community. I hope I featured her in my video. I made it so long ago now, I can't remember. I need to read and learn more about Olivia Newton John though. Thanks for sharing this info.
After Hard Candy, i feel like her albums got darker and just had less fun in them, to be completely honest. Even the most recent dance songs don't have that "spark" in them. The sonic fun that I heard in Music, Hung Up, Sorry, American Life, even if the lyrics were not happy ones, had dissipated, almost like the newer albums took themselves too seriously. Idk. Just an observation.
Great summary!
Thank you 😀
Thank you. It was the first band I was a fan of.
90s Gold 😀
Don’t hate me but I think anything after bedtime story is start of end of great eras in albums
that's cool- everyone hears music differently
She was on top of the world, then her girly show in Australia makes world headlines as the raciest show ever, with nude dancers and an orgy scene. Nothing comes close to her popularity today, she was onto something and it kept working.
Not at the level of Ray of Light or Confessions but close to a masterpiece
Ray of Light was her magnum opus
Last week I watched her live for the very first time. The crowd went wild when "La Isla Bonita" came out. I wasn't alive when "True Blue" was released but I'm old enough to remember watching videos from this era on VH1.
I'm so jealous - I would've loved to have seen the Celebration tour (it didn't come to Ireland). Looking forward to seeing the official edited version.
Of course! Max Martin is the real King of Pop. MJ the "artist" was the king, but the "pedo***" make lost him this tribute.
Neonazi pop group - Normal people don’t fancy extreme far right neonazi shit
Happy Nation takes on a new meaning
How did you mean? As in today's world?
@@jonnyharvey well lines like "Where the people understand and dream of perfect man" seems quite aryan nation idea..
we need more videos!!!!
I'm sure I'll make some more again at some point. Might not be for the foreseeable future though - unfortunately. They took forever and I didn't earn much from them - sorry ☹
Why has Tailor swift has won like 14 Grammys!
It took lady gaga 5 years to do what Madonna did in 30 years And I'm not comparing I'm just saying that impact doest not know time You can make such huge impact on people in such a short time like she did She became an icon just between the fame and the fame monster
She did become an icon in the space of 18 months- she completely infiltrated culture in that time. Everybody was talking about her and music legends were all clamouring to work with her and sing her praises.
In the beginning Ace of Base had problems to strike in Sweden. This is probably because journalists are generally leftist in Sweden. Everything in music should be based on criticism against something or a protest about something. ABBA and Roxette became so big in just a couple of months so that nobody listened to irrelevant swedish journalist. The music critics had time in Sweden to affect people´s minds, how uncool it would be to like Ace of Base, that it took some time to get passed this...But this swedish naivity, happy-go lucky was in tune what most of the world population imagined of Sweden. They thought it was true, that it was genuine, and they LOVED IT....
yes I heard that the Swedish media were quite negative and dismissive towards them in the beginning.
American Life is a masterpiece. 10/10. Madonna is simply the best in the industry. Nobody will ever surpass her.
She is still the Queen of Pop. The blueprint and a pioneer.
I think we love Divas because they’re strong characters that aren’t toxic macho men
Yes it's nice to see other, healthier forms of strength and power.
Linn IS around, she’s a successful business owner, but she has changed her name and appearance. She’s not recognisable. She lives with her partner and three dogs.
I hope she's happy. I'm sad for her though, because she feels like she has to live under a different identity. that being said, again, if she is happy - that's all that matters. And Linn, if you ever read this : your voice has been a comfort for me for 30 years and always will be. thank you from the bottom of my heart. Maya
How do you know?
She's probably far happier
I'm sorry but I'm still completely shook at Witness technically being a flop. I am 27 but at the time, I totally loved the songs & videos. No lie, they are still on my current playlists 😂 i love swish swish & bon appetit.... I like basically all the songs i heard from that era. I don't understand what went wrong 🤔
That’s cool - everyone hears music differently
Correction- Taylor won 3 GRAMMYs for 1989- Best Pop Vocal, Best Music Video, Album Of The Year. All of the three wins were in 2016.
Okay - what did I say? Maybe I said two cause oftentimes the video Grammy is considered an award for the director. I don’t remember - I made this video over a year ago.
@@jonnyharveyYeah, u said 2 but as far as I remember, the 'Best Music Video' Award is listed as one of the wins for Taylor herself as she PRODUCED it alongside Joseph Kahn who was the director. And during the pre-ceremony, Jack Antonoff did accept the award on behalf of Taylor and Kahn as none of them were there.
@@RonyChatter okay I will take that on board. Thanks for pointing it out.
I always theorised that many gay men look to their diva of choice as a role model. The diva’s “persona dramatis” as it’s portrayed in film, music video and live performance is usually a persona that strikes a chord with their gay admirers. For me, it was always Madonna. I always thought of her as the man I aspire to be: intellectual, strong, outspoken, rebellious 💪
Yeah I love Madonna too. It sounds corny but she inspires me in so many ways.
madonna's whole career is a mistake.
Great vid. God dammit they were good. What a band. What a legacy. For a moment in time they really did rule the world.
Thank you 😀
Album accounts for 22% of listening time? That's crazy, I thought it would be much lower. I haven't listened to a full album in over 2 decades.
I always official sources for the info
Music isn’t that much motivational as it used to be ( Rap )
This is so well researched and meticulously produced. Love yer face too❤
Thank you 😀🙏
How did you leave Lil Kim out of this ? She was the FIRST female rapper to openly embrace the gay community and a lot of gay black men and women looked up to her. HOW ?? Not only is she a sex icon she’s GAY icon and performs at many pride events . Some of these women’s DONT do that.
I don’t really know much about her - sorry. I never said it was a definitive account
Katy has just said it will be Dance in a recent interview. I think she’s taking her time and will Tour in the Fall.
That will be interesting
Your vids are great man! Love the bloopers at the end btw😅
cheers - thank you 😀
it's happening because of cancel culture.people don't want *anything* to be challenged.
Amazing era and an amazing artist. RedOne handled the melodies whilst Gaga branded herself with exceptional lyrics and concepts. What a duo.
Yes they had such great chemistry. There are just some musical pairings that work. I hope they collaborate again😀
She has vocal talent, song writing and dance. All of this turn her into megastart.
She had everything. She ticks every single box. Arguably more than anyone else
*Why don´t I know nOne of these things...what´s `wrong´ with me..R?CkY*
?? 😀
Xmen 97cartoon had happy nation ep4. Couldn't believe my ears
I didn’t know that - thanks for sharing 😀
gaga and p!nk were literally my childhood, seen them EVERYWHERE!!!
Two legends 🙌🙌
I suspect that the use of computers to compose music-instead of actually playing musical instruments-has led to a kind of mechanicalness and lifelessness of the music. Actually singing and playing musical instruments in real time allows for an emotionally organic, spontaneous and dynamic quality that tracks on a computer cannot replicate.
Very good point 👍
Very good point
The problem is not a lack of good singers. The problem is a lack of good songs. Composing is the problem.
Songwriting is a real skill. It takes years to develop
Thank you soo much for this!!! I adore kimbra, and always wondered what happened to them both!!
😀
All music is on the decline..when you think about it. Pop music, dance and hip hop all are declining in sales and streams since last 2010s…on another note rock and country have had a slowly but surely resurgence.
Yes I’ve heard that too
